Name?
Gerald Wong Han Feng, most gamer friends know me as ‘Faylar’. Han Feng (the chinese name) has no meaning whatsoever, or so my dad tells me.
Wtf is ‘FAYLAR’?
When I played Everquest, I wanted to make a Wood Elf Bard called ‘Faelar’, an elfish name which I blatantly ripped off Forgetten Realms Campaign Settings (3ed DND one). The server rejected it, so I just changed it to ‘Faylar’, which is apparently more pleasing to the eye somehow. I stuck with that ever since for almost every game I play.
How old are you, and what are you doing now?
I’m 21 and currently serving National Service. I was mono-intake for commandos but dropped out (heh) into Signals. I’m currently posted at 3SIG. That’s all I’m allowed to say I think.
Any plans for the future?
Hopefully, university.
What are your hobbies?
Playing games. Digital ones especially. If I have to say a genre of games I dislike, it would probably be 3D fighters (aka Soul Caliber). I’m crazy about 2D fighters and RTS’.
When did you start frequenting arcades?
I think it was since 2004. I was playing CVS2 at my friend’s house (I didn’t have a PS2 then). I picked this character called ‘Hibiki’ and loved her movesets. Then I began to do read and try scrubby shit from GameFAQs. I went to Bugis arcade eventually and tried my N-groove Iori/Rock/Hibiki on some random guy. I think what got me hooked was connecting a reaction super with Rock. It was fuck shiok. I kept going back ever since.
Do you play sports?
Basketball and badminton. I suck at basketball now though. I don’t play soccer.
Any idols?
Indiana Pacers’ Reggie Miller (no.31) from NBA. Fighting games would be Otaku, Buktooth, John Choi, Ricky Ortiz, Daigo. Those weren’t really idol, more like players I really respect. I don’t really have any role models that I would like to follow. I prefer to be in control of my life.
Anything about you that surprises people?
I play the piano. Grade 8. That’s probably the most unbelievable thing about me judging from all the strange reactions I’ve been getting from people around me when I tell them that.
